Hawaii Island - Kohala Elementary School’s weekly “Parent Hour,” on May 9, featured Hawaii Energy educator, Helen Wai. Parents, grandparents, and fifth graders learned what they can do to make a difference in cutting electric usage, in cutting costs, and in becoming energy efficient. Electric water heaters, old refrigerators and other appliances that are replaced with energy star products not only save energy, but also have an added bonus of receiving cash incentives and energy rebates. Wai also demonstrated the energy usage difference between Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFLs) versus incandescent bulbs. She also encouraged participants to unplug printers, chargers, televisions and other items when not in use.
