Energy Benchmarking

Energy benchmarking is the process of comparing a facility’s energy usage against facilities of a similar type and/or function (i.e. office building to office building). Hawaii Energy performs this tailored analysis to better understand each facility’s requirements, and we provide this information to building managers to help them make informed decisions about how to reduce their energy costs

In benchmarking, sites are compared against similar facilities in their sector using an Energy Use Intensity (EUI) rating – the annual energy usage of a site divided by its total utilized square footage. Our Energy Advisors engage with properties that show the highest EUIs (e.g. annual energy usage per square foot) to help identify specific energy efficiency opportunities. Benchmarking also works best when it is done consistently over time, since it is hard to manage what is not being measured.

How We Benchmark

The ENERGY STAR® Portfolio Manager is the standard measurement and tracking tool today for peer comparison benchmarking. Facility managers can input their building’s data and receive a score indicating how it is performing against similar types of facilities nationwide, tracking energy, water, greenhouse gas emissions and other metrics in a custom report.

We use publicly-available information, including county Tax-Map-Key (TMK) data and the national listing of ENERGY STAR Certified Buildings and Plants. We also utilize electricity billing data to calculate your EUI. Finally, we also assume that:

  • Facilities are utilized as intended
  • The energy use data provided is representative of normal consumption.
  • Square footage includes all enclosed spaces within a site. (Outdoor spaces may be included depending on facility type.)
  • In the rare case that floor data is unavailable, square footage is determined using publicly-available map data.
  • Site (not Source) EUI will be used for analysis. (Learn about the difference here.)
