5 No-Cost Things
You Can Do to Save Energy
There are a ton of ways to save energy, and they don’t always need to come with a hefty price tag. Using energy efficient ENERGY STAR appliances and electric vehicles are an awesome way to show the planet you care, but there’s also other small steps that you can take that can yield big savings.
1. Use a clothesline instead of a dryer
Take advantage of the Hawaii sun, and hang dry your clothes! Even if you don’t have space outside your home for a laundry line, a drying rack works just as well! It also folds up neatly, so when you’re not using it it won’t take up a lot of space.
2. Clean the coils on your refrigerator
It’s not just the food crumbs inside the fridge that you should be looking out for. The fridge coils underneath the fridge need some attention too! They are responsible for pushing heat out so clean them twice a year to ensure your fridge his performing at its best and keeping all the things inside it cold. Check out this video to see step by step, the easiest way to clean the coils.
3. Unplug electronics not is use
Why would you pay to use electricity that you’re not using? Basically that’s what you’re doing when you leave your game console, coffee maker or other household appliance plugged in. All that electricity used adds up!
4. Run your dishwasher only when its full
Yes, dishwashers can use a lot of energy and water, but we’re not saying you have to totally ban them. In fact, if you fill up your dishwasher completely, you may save more energy than if you were to wash all the dishes by hand.
Same with clothes washers, make sure to fill it up before you press the “on” button.
5. Use blinds, shades, and lined curtains or draperies to block heat from windows
You know how it can get hot standing by a window, even if it isn’t open? Well think about how many windows are in your house and the amount of heat that’s pouring in. By blocking out that heat with blinds, shades or curtains, you’re keeping the inside of your house cooler. Even if you have an AC, it’s still good to block out heat, so that it’s not working overtime and using more energy than needed.
