Hawaii Energy Is Offering Free Lighting Upgrades To Small Businesses And Restaurants

Businesses seeking relief on energy costs can take advantage now until June 30, 2021

Honolulu, Hawaii –Hawaii Energy announced it is offering free lighting retrofits to small businesses and restaurants in Hawaii, Honolulu and Maui counties through its Energy Advantage program. The Energy Advantage program was created in 2011 to provide Hawaii businesses with lighting upgrades at significantly reduced prices. For a limited time, the no-cost retrofits are available on a first-come, first served basis, from now until June 30, 2021, or until funds run out.

“During this pandemic, we know how challenging it has been for so many small businesses throughout our community. When every dollar matters to these businesses, the Energy Advantage program can provide a simple and effective solution to lowering electricity costs,” said Brian Kealoha, executive director of Hawaii Energy. “Now that we’ve made it available at no cost, we hope that businesses will take advantage of this opportunity to not only reduce their operating costs, but to also contribute to Hawaii’s clean energy future.”

To qualify for the free lighting retrofit, businesses must be located in Hawaii, Honolulu or Maui counties and must be one of the following:

  • A restaurant;
  • A small business on electric utility billing rate schedule G; or
  • A small business on a master-metered electric utility account with a total space less than 5,000 sq. ft.

Qualified businesses interested in participating must first select an approved Energy Advantage Contractor. Contractors will provide businesses with a free lighting assessment, install lighting samples and help complete the Energy Advantage program application. Once an application has been completed and approved, the selected contractor will schedule and complete the lighting retrofit at no cost.

Participating businesses notice an almost immediate impact on their energy usage after completing a retrofit, one of which is Palama Settlement who participated in the program earlier this year. “Hawaii Energy and the contractors for the project, AESolutions and Illuminage Group were extremely knowledgeable and helpful in helping us replace the old, inefficient lighting in our gym, administrative offices, and Rath Building with new LED lights,” said Stephanie, facilities coordinator at Palama Settlement. “In areas where the lights were replaced, our light usage has been cut by almost 50% so the money we save on our electricity bill can be redirected to other areas of need.”
