Hawaii Energy Announces Appliance Recycling Program And Free Haul-Away Service For Hawaii Island Residents
Rid-A-Fridge program participants receive $75 rebate
Honolulu, Hawaii – Hawaii Energy has announced free haul-away service of old refrigerators and freezers for Hawaii Island residents as part of its Rid-A-Fridge appliance recycling program. The Rid-A-Fridge program encourages the surrendering and recycling of old, secondary working refrigerators and freezers to help residents cut back on their home energy usage. Program participants will receive a $75 rebate for every appliance turned in for recycling.
“Our Rid-A-Program is a convenient way for residents to recycle their old, high energy-consuming refrigerators and freezers while saving money on their monthly electric bill,” said Claire Krebs, Residential Program Manager for Hawaii Energy. “We’re pleased to partner with two reputable, local companies to now offer free haul-away service as part of this program, alleviating that step for participants and ensuring that these old appliances are recycled properly.”
Since 2010, Hawaii Energy has recycled more than 6,700 units through its Rid-A-Fridge program across Hawaii Island, Maui County and Oahu. Participants will need:
- Contract ID# from utility bill.
- Information of old, working 14 cubic feet (or larger) refrigerator or freezer, including the make, model, serial number, age and size.
- To call to schedule a free pick-up: 537-5577 or toll-free 1-877-231-8222. Haulers will pick up old refrigerators and/or freezers and submit the application on the participant’s behalf.
Residents can also opt to donate their $75 rebate to the Hawaii Food Basket on Hawaii Island to assist Hawaii’s hungry. To donate, Rid-A-Fridge participants can simply check the “I’d like to make a difference” box on their application and the $75 rebate will go directly to the food bank.
Rebates will be mailed to participants within six to eight weeks upon receiving completed applications. For more information on the Rid-A-Fridge Program, visit https://hawaiienergy.com/rid-a-fridge.
