Honolulu, Hawai‘i – With federal tax credits for residential solar ending on Dec. 31, 2025,
Hawaiʻi Energy, the state’s energy conservation program, announced today that it is increasing
rebates for solar water heater installations and tune-ups, beginning January 26 through June
30, 2026. Hawaiʻi Energy is also introducing a tiered rebate structure based on system size and
location to better reflect local installation costs and deliver greater saving for residents.
“Water heating accounts for the largest share of electricity use in most Hawaii homes, making
solar water heating one of the most effective ways to lower electricity bills,” said Caroline Carl,
executive director of Hawaiʻi Energy. “With the federal tax credits no longer available, these
increased rebates help fill a critical gap and ensure households across the state can continue to
invest in proven, cost-saving energy solutions that deliver long-term savings.”
Under the new structure, rebates for solar water heater installations will range from $2,350 to
$2,750 depending on system size and county, while rebates for system tune-ups, recommended
every five years to maintain efficiency, will increase to as much as $325. Hawai‘i Energy’s new
solar water heater rebates will be offered as follows:
Solar Water Heater Installation Rebates:
80-gallon systems
- City and County of Honolulu: $2,350
- Hawaiʻi County: $2,450
- Maui County: $2,600
120-gallon systems
- City and County of Honolulu: $2,500
- Hawaiʻi County: $2,600
- Maui County: $2,750
Solar Water Heater Tune-Up Rebates:
- City and County of Honolulu: $250
- Hawaiʻi County: $300
- Maui County: $325
Solar water heaters use the sun’s energy to heat water, reducing the amount of electricity
needed for everyday hot water use and helping households lower their monthly utility bills over
time. Regular tune-ups, recommended every five years, help maintain system performance,
improve efficiency, and extend equipment life so homeowners continue to benefit from longterm energy savings.
Customers must use one of Hawai‘i Energy’s participating contractors to receive the rebate.
Rebates are available to eligible residential electric utility ratepayers on Hawaiʻi Island, Lānaʻi,
Maui, Molokaʻi, and Oʻahu and are offered on a first-come, first-served basis while funds last.
Kauaʻi residents are not eligible, as the island is served by a utility cooperative.
Hawai‘i Energy encourages residents to take advantage of the increased incentives before the June 30
deadline. For more information or to apply for a rebate, visit HawaiiEnergy.com/Rebates
