Packaged and Split Air Conditioning

In Hawaii, “rooftop units,” or RTUs, make-up a majority of A/C systems used in our businesses. With A/C being one of the largest users of energy in your business, upgrading to an energy efficient version is a smart move. We provide rebates for new packaged or split system units that are at least 10% more efficient than our current energy code.


Inverter Variable Refrigerant Flow Air Conditioner (IVRF)

An inverter variable refrigerant flow system provides individualized comfort and control in different zones in a building to minimize energy usage. An IVRF system can reduce energy usage by 20-35%, maximize energy efficiency and help achieve a sustainable design.


Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) for HVAC Fans

VFDs control the speed of an HVAC fan by varying the electrical frequency depending on how much (or how little) power is needed at a given time. The less speed, the less electricity used. VFDs also reduce wear and tear on the system.

Air and Water-Cooled Chillers

Chillers are used to cool larger facilities. Most chillers have a service life of 10 to 20 years and can account for up to 35% of a facility’s electrical energy use. Hawaii Energy offers a standard chiller incentive of $45 per ton for air and water-cooled chillers that meets the Hawaii Energy Premium Efficiency IPLV (kW/ton) table. Direct Outdoor Air Systems (DOAS)

Direct Outdoor Air Systems (DOAS) provide dedicated ventilation by conditioning outdoor air separately from the building’s primary heating and cooling system. Through efficient ventilation air delivery, DOAS can improve indoor air quality while reducing overall HVAC energy consumption. Hawai’i Energy offers incentives for qualifying Direct Expansion (DX) DOAS systems installed in new construction.


FEI Certified Standalone Fans

Fans can account for a significant portion of a facility’s energy use. Fans that are certified under the Fan Energy Index (FEI) standard are designed to operate more efficiently while maintaining a standardized airflow performance. Hawaii Energy offers incentives for HVAC supply, return, exhaust, and relief fans that exceed the minimum FEI requirements.


Hotel Room Energy Management System

The installation of energy management systems in hotels gives thermostat controls to existing guest room air conditioning systems through the use of occupancy sensors.
