Applications open Aug. 19 for discounted ENERGY STAR refrigerators and freezers
Honolulu, Hawaii – Hawaiʻi Energy, the state’s energy conservation program, has launched an Appliance Trade-Up Program to help Wahiawa residents lower energy use and manage rising electricity costs by replacing older, inefficient appliances. Residents in the 96786 ZIP code can trade in old, working refrigerators and/or freezers for new ENERGY STAR® models for as low as $250 per unit. Applications open Aug. 19 and close Oct. 19, 2026.
“Refrigerators and freezers are among the hardest-working appliances in any home, operating 24 hours a day,” said Caroline Carl, executive director of Hawaii Energy. “Many Hawaii families are paying hundreds of dollars more in energy costs with an older refrigerator, but the upfront cost of replacing it can be a barrier. Our Appliance Trade-Up Program makes these upgrades more affordable, helping local families reduce energy use today, while benefitting from lower electric bills for years to come.”
Applications will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis from Aug. 19 – Oct. 19, 2026, or until program capacity is reached. To qualify, applicants must live in the 96786 ZIP code and have a working refrigerator or freezer that is at least 14 cubic feet to trade in. Participants can select from a 17.5-cubic-foot refrigerator, a 21-cubic-foot refrigerator or a 17.3-cubic-foot freezer. Delivery of the new appliance is included.
Since 2022, Hawaii Energy’s Appliance Trade-Up Program has helped more than 1,500 households replace inefficient appliances, resulting in 11.2 million kilowatt-hours of projected lifetime energy savings.
The Wahiawa Appliance Trade-Up Program will be offered in partnership with the Leilehua Parent-Teacher-Student Organization.
